ELA 8: 11/4/19 - 11/8/19


ELA 8

Monday (11/4): *Vaping assembly – period 2 -  Bell ringers; Vocabulary definitions and jam – students will define terms for unit 3 in writing and complete a vocabulary jam for unit 3 vocab. terms (argument terms)
Study Island: Independent practice: Evaluating arguments (due by end of day tomorrow, 11/5).

Tuesday (11/5): *Veterans’ Day assembly (periods 1, 2) - Bell ringers; Students in pm classes will watch a TED talk video presenting the argument of “eating bugs as a part of our daily diet.” Students will use a graphic organizer to record the speaker’s claim and evidence used to support the claim. Students will then decide whether they agree or disagree with the argument that was presented, and we will discuss the evidence they recorded and if students believe it is strong or weak evidence.
Study Island: Individual practice: Finish evaluating evidence (finish others that are not done yet for MP 2 – Pronouns, Varied Sentence Structure)

Wednesday (11/6): Diversity Club trip to Broad Mt. nursing home – complete vocabulary squares for Unit 3 academic vocabulary and complete goals; read launch text for unit 3 (Freedom of the Press – p. 258-259) and complete the summary and quickwrite on pages 260-261.
Study Island – Finish any topics that students may be behind on for start of marking period 2 (evaluate arguments, pronouns, varied sentence structure).

Thursday (11/7): Bell ringers; Discuss vocab. words for unit 3 academic vocab.; discuss launch text, summary, and quickwrite and check work; work on vocab. Squares for whole-class learning selection (Barrington Irving, Pilot and Educator) p. 264
Study Island – New topic: Analyzing conflicting information – go over lesson notes and begin independent practice (due Monday).

Friday (11/08): Lesson study – periods 1 and 2; Bell ringers; check vocab. Squares for concept vocab. terms p. 264; class poll and discussion (what matters); read whole-class learning selection (Barrington Irving, Pilot and Educator) p. 265 – 268 and complete comprehension questions on page 269.
Study Island – Individual practice – analyzing conflicting information (due Monday)

Essential Question: Unit 3 – When is it right to take a stand?
