1/29/18 – 2/02/18
 English Literature – Grade 8 (Periods 1, 6, 7)

Monday (1/29): Textbook – pages 310-312: Students will work independently on all sections on these pages based on the speech, “Words Do Not Pay.” We will discuss their work tomorrow. All work on these pages is due tomorrow.

Tuesday (1/30): Discuss pages 310-312 in the textbook (analyze the text questions, close read, concept vocab. and word study, analyzing craft and structure, and author’s style). If time permits, students will begin working on the first-read extension questions worksheet (questions 1-3).

Wednesday (1/31): Review/discuss questions 1-3 on the first-read extension questions worksheet. Students will then also discuss/analyze the TDA prompt on the worksheet. Students will work with a partner on the introduction paragraph, and then we will discuss responses together. We will write an intro. paragraph together as a class.

Thursday (2/1): Work on TDA with partner (intro./body) and share as a class. Write next paragraphs on board together.


Friday (2/2): Continue working on TDA with partner (body/conclusion) and share as a class. Finish writing TDA response together on board.

English Composition – Grade 8 (Periods 3, 5, 8)

Monday (1/29): Introduce new topic - fragments and run-ons. Discuss notes and complete group practice session. Fragments and run-ons due Thursday.

Tuesday (1/30): Practice questions on fragments and run-ons (Study Island WIN time).

Wednesday (1/31): Practice questions on fragments and run-ons (Study Island WIN time).

Thursday (2/01): Introduce new topic – evaluating argument. Discuss notes and complete group practice session on evaluating arguments. This topic is due Tuesday.

Friday (2/02): Practice questions on evaluating arguments (Study Island WIN time).

 English Literature – Grade 8 (Periods 1, 6, 7)

Monday (1/22): Finish study guide packet and discuss responses. Test is on Wednesday on “Ban the Ban” and “Soda’s a Problem But….” Test will be on Pearson Realize.

Tuesday (1/23): Finish reviewing study guide packet for the test (if needed). Students will then move on to the small group section in unit 3. We will read the text, “Words Do Not Pay” together as a class using first read strategies. Students will complete vocab. squares for the concept vocab. words. Squares are due on Friday.

Wednesday (1/24): Test on Pearson Realize.com. Students may use the book also. After the test, students should work on vocab. squares if not finished with them.

Thursday (1/25): Students will work independently on pages 310 – 312. Work on these pages is due Monday. They must also complete the study guide packet for Tuesday.


Friday (1/26): Students will work on independent assignments on pages 310 – 312 and the study packet. Test on “Words Do Not Pay” will be Friday of next week (2/2).

Thursday (1/25): Work on earning a blue ribbon for fragments and run-ons on Study Island.

Friday (1/26): Work on earning a blue ribbon for fragments and run-ons on Study Island.

 English Literature – Grade 8 (Periods 1, 6, 7)

Monday (1/8): Early dismissal – period 1 Literature class (bell ringer quiz and check vocab. squares/collect test corrections) Students will work on close reads and analyze the text questions.

Tuesday (1/9): Textbook – pages 288-289 (review close reads) and analyze the text questions on page 290. Discuss responses and check. Check vocab. squares and collect test corrections. Discuss concept vocab. words and check definitions.

Wednesday (1/10): Students will work in small groups on the first read extension questions for “Ban the Ban/Soda’s a Problem But…” (questions 1-4). As a class, we will discuss responses to questions 1-4. Question 5 in the packet is a TDA prompt which students will respond to independently. TDA response is due Friday.

Thursday (1/11): Work on TDA prompt. Response is due tomorrow.


Friday (1/12): Turn in TDA response and complete page 291 on author’s argument. Discuss responses together. Complete pages 292 and 293 for Monday.

Friday (1/12): Study Island – complete practice questions on character topic. Must earn blue ribbon for this topic.

 English Literature – Grade 8 (Periods 1, 6, 7)

Monday (1/1): No School – New Year’s Day

Tuesday (1/2): Textbook – page 286 – Intro. To concept vocabulary for the next selection (Ban the Ban/Soda’s a Problem But…). Students will rank the words in the chart on page 286 and work on vocab. squares for each word. Vocab. squares are due Friday (1/5).

Wednesday (1/3): Make up tests for the selection, “Three Cheers for the Nanny State.” Students will also complete the first read of the selection on page 287. They will complete first read notes and the comprehension questions on page 289. They may then work on vocab. squares for the remainder of time today. Vocab. squares are due Friday.  

Thursday (1/4): Complete close-read notes on pages 288 and 289 in the margins. Complete the analyze the text questions on the bottom of page 290. We will discuss the close reads and analyze the text questions together.


Friday (1/5): Check vocab. squares. Students will work in small groups on the first read extension questions for “Ban the Ban/Soda’s a Problem But…” (questions 1-4). As a class, we will discuss responses to questions 1-4. Question 5 in the packet is a TDA prompt which students will respond to independently.

Wednesday (1/3): Make up tests for the selection test, “Three Cheers for the Nanny State.” Students will work on practice questions on summary (Study Island). They must earn a blue ribbon in summary before moving on.

Thursday (1/4): Make up tests for the selection test, “Three Cheers for the Nanny State.” Students will work on practice questions on summary (Study Island). They must earn a blue ribbon in summary before moving on.

Friday (1/5): Review session 2: Textual Evidence, Inferences/Generalizations, Theme, and Summary – students must complete the review session today in class.
