Monday (12/10): Textbook – p. 276 – Three Cheers for the Nanny State. Students will perform first read of this essay together and annotate while reading. We will then complete the comprehension check questions after the text and discuss together. Students will then take the comprehension closure quiz. Test on “Three Cheers for the Nanny State” will be on Monday (12/17). Students will get their study guide today as well. Students are not required to complete the study guide, but it is highly encouraged as a way to prepare for the test.
·         Study Island – Finish Inferences and generalizations and theme/central idea on your own (if needed) and work on finishing punctuation, spelling, fragments/run-ons. Some students may need to finish the benchmark test on Study Island – they will go to the library to do this.

Tuesday (12/11): Textbook – p. 282 – 283 and practice worksheet on author’s argument. Students will complete the practice sections in the book and on the w.s. and we will discuss as a class when finished. Students will then take the closure quizzes on analyze the text questions and craft and structure.
·         Study Island – New topic: phrases and clauses – lesson and group session.

Wednesday (12/12): Textbook p. 284-285 – complete practice sections in the book and on the practice worksheets for vocab./word study and conventions. We will review/discuss as a class together and students will then take the closure quizzes on vocab./word study and conventions (phrases/clauses).

Students will work at their own pace to complete the tutorial/lesson, practice session, and quiz for each topic assigned.

Monday (8/27): Classroom rules and expectations, parent letters, course overview, about me bubble name activity.

Tuesday (8/28): Class meeting: 7th period. About me bubble name activity – finish and begin introductions. Each day, a few students will share their poster with the class as a way to introduce themselves. If time permits, go over iPad procedures (assign iPad numbers) and log onto Pearson Realize to start the beginning of year test. Each student will receive a paper copy of the test also.

Wednesday (8/29): Pearson Realize beginning of year test. Students will fill in the paper copy as well as the online test. The beginning of year test will help gather baseline data about students’ current ELA knowledge and skills in order to help drive instruction.

Thursday (8/30): Pearson Realize beginning of year test. Students will continue taking the test until they finish all questions. Once they finish the test on Pearson, students will write down their areas of need and strength as well as their test score on their data sheet. Students will keep data sheets in their folders/binders. Students will then log onto Study Island and begin the ELA grade 8 benchmark 1 test. Each student will receive a paper copy of the benchmark test to fill out along with entering their answers online.

Friday (8/31): Pep rally at 1:30 p.m. Students will work on the Study Island benchmark test.

English Composition – Grade 8 (Periods 3, 5, 8)

Monday (5/7): Computer lab – work on memorial project in teams. Some teams will begin presenting this week.

Tuesday (5/8): Computer lab – memorial proposal presentations (teams that have been assigned to present today will go first). After presentations, students will begin working on the World Memory Project on computers.

Wednesday (5/9): Computer lab – memorial proposal presentations at start of class. After, students will work on the World Memory Project.

Thursday (5/10):  Computer lab – memorial proposal presentations at start of class. After, students will work on the World Memory Project.

Friday (5/11): 910A classroom – memorial proposal presentations at start of class. After, students will view a documentary on the human brain further exploring the topic of human intelligence (Unit 4).
