Monday
·         Academic English 9 – Check vocabulary definitions; review definitions, worksheet, and sentences for vocab. lesson 2B. Test on nouns.

·         Practical English/Literature 11 – Prac Eng: Students will review chapter two of grammar (Parts of the Sentence) by discussing the review sections completed from the text book.

      Prac Lit: Continue reading Act 2 of The Crucible and analyze Act 2 by completing study guide questions. Students will also analyze quotes from Act 2 and identify different types of conflict based on the quotes.

·         PSSA Reading 11/12 - No Class
Tuesday
·         Academic English 9 – Review chapter 3 study guide questions for Night. Students will read chapter four of Night and complete study guide questions. Students will also be given an essay writing prompt to respond to. Rough draft is due on Friday.

·         Practical English/Literature 11 – Prac. Eng: Students will prepare for a test on Parts of the Sentence (chapter 2) by reviewing the sections completed in the textbook.

Prac. Lit: Students will continue reading Act 2 of The Crucible and complete study guide questions together. Students will also analyze scenes in the film version of the play.

·         PSSA Reading 11/12 - Finish working on lesson 1 in the PSSA book (Differentiating Fact from Opinion). As a class, we will discuss lesson 1 together to determine competency. Students will begin lesson 2 (differentiate fact from opinion).
Wednesday
·         Academic English 9 – Students will review chapter four of Night together as a class by discussing the study guide questions. Students will begin reading chapter five of Night in small groups and work on study guide questions together.

·         Practical English/Literature 11 – Prac. Eng: Students will take a test on chapter 2 (parts of the sentence). Students will also begin chapter three of grammar by taking notes and identifying phrases.

Prac. Lit: Students will continue reading The Crucible together as a class (Act 2). Students will also complete study guide questions and analyze quotes from Act 2 discussing types of conflict.

·         PSSA Reading 11/12 - No Class
Thursday
·         Academic English 9 – Students will take a quiz on Vocabulary lesson 2B and then define the terms for lesson 3A. Students will also be given the worksheet to complete for lesson 3A and write sentences for this lesson on their own. Students will work on finishing essay rough drafts for tomorrow.

·         Practical English/Literature 11 – Prac. Eng: Students will go to the library for career exploration during today’s class.

Prac. Lit: Continue to read Act 2 of The Crucible and work on study guide questions together. View scenes from the film version to discuss and analyze.

·         PSSA Reading 11/12 - Finish lesson two and discuss the lesson together. Students will also begin working on lesson three in the book (essential and non-essential information).
Friday
·          Academic English 9 – Students will proofread and revise the rough draft of their essay for Night. Final copy is due next week. Students will also finish reading chapter five of Night and review the study guide questions for this chapter.

·         Practical English/Literature 11 – Prac. Eng: Identify and define verbals and verbal phrases in sentences and complete practice worksheets.

Prac. Lit: Finish reading Act 2 of The Crucible together. Students will read assigned parts and work together to complete the study guide/analyze quotes.

• Academic English 9 – Check vocabulary definitions; review definitions, worksheet, and sentences for vocab. lesson 1B. Discuss Night study guide questions for chapter one.

• Practical English/Literature 11 – Prac Eng: Students will type final copy of 5x5 essay on computers. Final copy of essay is due tomorrow.

Prac Lit: Begin reading Act 1 of The Crucible together. Students will be assigned parts to read and they will also be given the study guide for Act 1 to complete as we read. Students will work together on the study guide questions.


• PSSA Reading 11/12 - No Class

Tuesday
• Academic English 9 – Define literary terms for Night. Students will define each literary device and look for examples of each type as they read Night. As a class, we will begin to read chapter two of Night. Students will work together on study guide questions for chapter two.

• Practical English/Literature 11 – Prac. Eng: Students will review the vocabulary worksheets for lesson 1 in preparation for a quiz tomorrow.

Prac. Lit: Students will continue reading Act 1 of The Crucible and they will work on study guide questions together.


• PSSA Reading 11/12 - Read New York Times news article (read and use talking to text strategy); Complete questions and discuss responses; Discuss format for open-ended prompts and practice answering a prompt using the format given.

Wednesday
• Academic English 9 – Grammar: Nouns – Students will complete a worksheet on identifying concrete and abstract nouns and differentiating between the two types. They will also complete a worksheet on identifying collective and compound nouns. We will discuss these noun types as a class and review the worksheets together to determine the students’ competency. We will then continue reading Night (chapter three) and students will complete study guide questions for chapter three.

• Practical English/Literature 11 – Prac. Eng: Students will take a quiz on vocabulary terms for lesson 1. Students will then distinguish between the compound subject and the compound verb and be able to identify each part in sentences (Chapter 2 in grammar book – “The Parts of a Sentence”).

Prac. Lit: Students will continue reading The Crucible together as a class.


• PSSA Reading 11/12 - No class

Thursday
• Academic English 9 – Students will take a quiz on Vocabulary lesson 1B and then define the terms for lesson 2A. Students will also be given the worksheet to complete for lesson 2A and write sentences for this lesson on their own. When finished vocabulary work, students will work on identifying examples of literary elements/devices in the book up to chapter three.

• Practical English/Literature 11 – Prac. Eng: Students will define and identify complements, direct objects, and indirect objects within sentences.

Prac. Lit: Define literary devices presented in The Crucible and find examples of each element within the play as students read. Students will continue to read Act 1 of the play and work together in small groups to complete study guide questions.


• PSSA Reading 11/12 - Students will view sample PSSA questions and determine meanings for unfamiliar words within the questions. Students will view sample responses and score sample responses based on the PSSA grading rubric provided. Students will discuss the prompts, questions, and responses during class in preparation to complete upcoming PSSA lessons.

Friday
• Academic English 9 – Students will finish chapter three of Night together as a class. Students will then work on study guide questions for chapter three together in small groups. As a class, we will discuss key points and major themes presented in the book thus far. We will also examine some of the literary devices/elements examples found within the book thus far and analyze the author’s purpose for including these in his writing.

• Practical English/Literature 11 – Prac. Eng: Students will define and identify subject complements and classify sentences.

Prac. Lit: Continue reading Act 1 of The Crucible together. Students will be assigned parts to read. Discuss the connection to McCarthyism during the 1950s and the parallels between the play and the events of the Red Scare. Students will complete a web quest on McCarthyism to answer questions about the events of the period together in small groups.

Monday: No School - Labor Day

Tuesday
• Academic English 9 – Review vocabulary definitions, worksheet, and sentences for vocab. terms on list 1-A. Grammar: Students will complete pages 3-6 in the grammar book on nouns. We will discuss different types of nouns together and students will practice identifying and classifying nouns independently.

• Practical English/Literature 11 – Prac. Eng: Define today’s vocabulary terms. Students will also be given a writing prompt to respond to by writing a 5 x 5 essay discussing the skills needed to be successful in today’s competitive workforce. Students will brainstorm and write their rough draft today in class.

Prac. Lit: Introduction to “The Crucible” and the Salem Witch Trials – Students will view the History Channel’s video on the Salem Witch Trials and complete a note taking sheet while viewing the video.


• PSSA Reading 11/12 - Students will write a five paragraph essay using the correct format to describe the skills needed to be successful in today’s workforce. Students will write a rough draft, proofread, and revise the essay. We will discuss elements of informational essays to ensure students know the purpose/audience for their writing.

Wednesday
• Academic English 9 – Students will be given a list of literary terms presented in Night to define for homework. Continue reading chapter 1 of Night together as a class. Students will also work in small groups to complete questions on the study guide for chapter 1. Zip game – vocabulary review game (quiz tomorrow)

• Practical English/Literature 11 – Prac. Eng: Students will finish writing rough drafts and proofread/revise the rough draft before writing the final copy. Review vocabulary list 1 in preparation for quiz on Friday.

Students will take notes on complements, direct objects, and indirect objects and examine examples of each in the book. Students will then practice identifying these together as a class. Students will also complete practice exercises for each section independently.
