05/08/17 – 05/12/17
8th Grade English (Periods 1, 2, 3, 5B, 6, 7, 8):

Monday (05/08): Students will complete the new word splat for this week and the bell ringer for today. Students will then either take a quiz on theme (if they have not already taken it on Friday), or they will discuss/review the worksheets on concept vocabulary and word study and direct/indirect objects. Students will receive the study guide for the test on “Flowers for Algernon.” The test is on Friday (5/12).

Tuesday (05/09): Students will complete the bell ringer for today. They will then discuss responses on the study guide for “Flowers for Algernon.”

Wednesday (05/10): Students will complete the bell ringer for today. They will finish discussing responses to the study guide for “Flowers for Algernon” (if necessary). Students will then complete the chart with the concept vocabulary for the excerpt from the play, “Flowers for Algernon” (p. 384). Students will read the text together with assigned reading parts. They will take notes for their first-read observations as we read together. They will complete the comprehension questions after we finish reading the text.

Thursday (05/11): Students will complete the bell ringer for today. If not completed yesterday, students will complete the chart with the concept vocabulary for the excerpt from the play, “Flowers for Algernon” (p. 384). Students will read the text together with assigned reading parts. They will take notes for their first-read observations as we read together. They will complete the comprehension questions after we finish reading the text.

Friday (05/12): Students will take a test on “Flowers for Algernon.” After the test, students will complete the “Close Read the Text” question at the top of page 387 and the section on concept vocabulary (Why These Words and Practice) at the bottom of page 387. They will then complete the chart on page 388 to compare short story and script.

05/01/17 – 05/05/17
8th Grade English (Periods 1, 2, 3, 5B, 6, 7, 8):

Monday (05/01): Students will complete and discuss the new word splat word for this week and the new character trait splat for the month of May. Students in periods 1, 2, and 3 will finish watching the film, “Flowers for Algernon.” While watching, they will complete a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the film to the written story. Once finished watching the film, we will discuss key similarities and differences that students noted. Periods 5, 6, 7, and 8 will finish the close read notes in the textbook for the story and the analyze the text questions on page 380. We will discuss responses together as a class, and students will turn in their work. We will then read and discuss page 381 on theme, conflict, and allusion within the story. Students will complete the practice items below on page 381.

Tuesday (05/02): Students will finish page 381 and discuss responses together. Students will then complete a practice worksheet focusing on theme. Students will take a quiz on theme tomorrow. Students will also complete the concept vocabulary and conventions on pages 382 and 383 in the textbook.

Wednesday (05/03): Students will take a quiz on theme. Students will then finish pages 382 and 383 (concept vocabulary and conventions: direct and indirect objects). We will examine student responses to the activities on these pages together to check for understanding. Students will also receive a study guide for the selection test on “Flowers for Algernon.” The test will be next week (Thursday 5/11). The study guide must be completed for Monday (5/8).

Thursday (05/04): Students will complete practice worksheets on concept vocabulary and direct/indirect objects in class. We will review responses together as a class. Students will take a quiz on direct and indirect objects tomorrow. Students will then work on the study guide they received yesterday.

Friday (05/05): Students will take a quiz on direct and indirect objects. They will then work on completing the study guide for the selection test.
