8^th Grade English (Periods 1, 2, 3, 5B, 6, 7, 8):

Monday (02/13): Computer lab (934) to take the CDT English test.

Tuesday (02/14): Computer lab (934) to take the CDT English test. Return characterization quizzes/students will chart results on their progress charts.

Wednesday (02/15): Discuss/review concept vocabulary and conventions worksheets and textbook pages (272-273) from the magazine article, “Barrington Irving, Pilot and Educator.” Discuss study guide together. The test is tomorrow. Students may use their textbook for certain sections of the test. They will be able to go back to the article to help answer certain questions on the test. Chart levels of understanding for concept vocabulary terms and conventions.

Thursday (02/16): Selection test on the magazine article, “Barrington Irving, Pilot and Educator.” Students may use their textbook for certain sections of the test. They will be able to go back to the article to help answer certain questions on the test. Once finished with the test, students will complete/turn in any missing assignments they may have so far in the 3^rd marking period.

Friday (02/17): Act 80 Day – No school for students

8^th Grade English (Periods 1, 2, 3, 5B, 6, 7, 8):

Monday (02/06): Students will take a quiz on characterization (direct and indirect). After the quiz, they will chart their progress on characterization in nonfiction on their progress charts. They will also, complete page 272 in the textbook on concept vocabulary and word study for “Barrington Irving…” as well as the practice worksheet for both of these skills. If students do not get done all items on page 272 and/or the worksheet, they must finish them for homework for tomorrow.

Tuesday (02/07): Students will complete page 273 in the textbook on conventions: nouns and pronouns. They will also complete a practice worksheet on these conventions and a worksheet on effective elements of an argument.

Wednesday (02/08): Data Delay – Computer lab (934) to take the CDT English test. Students will also be given a study guide for the “Barrington Irving…” article. They will use this to study for the test on this selection. We will discuss the study guide together on Friday and Monday. The test will be on Wednesday (2/15).

Thursday (02/09): Computer lab (934) to take the CDT English test.

Friday (02/10): Computer lab (934) to take the CDT English test (if more time is necessary). Otherwise, we will review the study guide for the selection test on “Barrington Irving….” The test is on Wednesday (2/15)

8^th Grade English (Periods 1, 2, 3, 5B, 6, 7, 8):

Monday (01/30): Students will discuss and view examples of the close read sections in “Barrington Irving, Pilot and Educator.” We will examine specific annotations for these examples and why they were chosen. Students will discuss responses for the “Analyze the Text” section on page 270.

Tuesday (01/31): Progress chart: students will chart progress on annotating. Students will then examine page 271 together in the textbook. Students will read the analyze craft and structure section and complete a practice worksheet on these items. This worksheet is homework for tomorrow if it is not completed during class today. Students will also read and complete the practice section on page 271. We will discuss these questions together. Students will take a quiz on characterization on Friday.

Wednesday (02/01): As a class, we will check answers to the worksheet on characterization. Students will chart their progress after checking this worksheet. If needed, students will complete another practice worksheet on characterization in order to prepare for the quiz on Friday.

Thursday (02/02): Students will complete page 272 in the textbook on the concept vocabulary for the “Barrington Irving…” article. We will discuss responses together and chart progress.

Friday (02/03): Students will take a quiz on characterization (direct and indirect). After the quiz, students will work on a practice worksheet for the concept vocabulary from the magazine article. We will check responses together. Students will chart progress with concept vocabulary.

8^th Grade English (Periods 1, 2, 3, 5B, 6, 7, 8):

Monday (01/23): A.M. periods – students will discuss/review the summary and quick-write activity from Friday. Students will receive their nonfiction narratives back and we will discuss results. P.M. periods will attend the reward event for the end of the marking period.

Tuesday (01/24): Students will discuss/review the summary and quick-write activity from Friday. This will be checked for a grade. Students will receive their nonfiction narratives back and we will discuss results. Students will also practice using the academic vocabulary terms in sentences of their own. We will discuss examples together in class. Students will then begin the next text, “Barrington Irving, Pilot and Educator.” Students will rank the concept vocabulary terms and complete a practice worksheet with the concept vocabulary terms. Students will also complete a first read of the text.

Wednesday (01/25): We will review the first read notes that students made with the text from yesterday, and students will then complete the comprehension check questions. We will view the video that connects with this text and discuss it as well as responses for the comprehension check questions.

Thursday (01/26): Students will perform a close read of the text, marking up the text with their annotations. They will also complete the analyze the text section. We will discuss and view examples of the close read, and discuss the analysis questions together.

Friday (01/27): Students will examine page 271 together in the textbook. Students will read the analyze craft and structure section and complete a practice worksheet on these items. Students will also read and complete the practice section on page 271.

Monday (01/16): In-Service Day

Tuesday (01/17): Students will complete common core companion lessons on active vs. passive voice and using ellipses.

Wednesday (01/18): Midterm exams

Thursday (01/19): Students will begin the next unit in the Pearson textbook. As a class, we will examine the unit introduction video and goals. Students will assess their levels with the specific areas within this unit. We will then examine the academic vocabulary for the unit.

Friday (01/20): Students will examine the launch text for the unit, “Freedom of the Press.” As a class, we will complete the activities within the textbook for the launch text.

8^th Grade English (Periods 1, 2, 3, 5B, 6, 7, 8):

Monday (01/09): Students will finish typing and print the final copy of the nonfiction narrative (if necessary). Students will also revisit active vs. passive verbs. We will discuss notes as a class, and students will complete practice worksheets. We will go over responses together. Students will keep these worksheets to use as another study resource for the midterm exam.

Tuesday (01/10): Students will discuss notes on commas, dashes, and ellipses. Students will then complete practice sections on worksheets. We will review responses together.

Wednesday (01/11): Students will discuss notes on using resources, such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, and thesauruses. Students will complete practice sections on worksheets provided.

Thursday (01/12): As a class, we will go over the review packet study guide for the midterm exam. The exam is on Tuesday, January 17^th.

Friday (01/13): We will address any further questions about the midterm exam from the study guide packet today. Students will turn in the study guide on Tuesday.

8^th Grade English (Periods 1, 2, 3, 5B, 6, 7, 8):

Monday (01/02): No School

Tuesday (01/03): Draft of narrative is due today. Students will work with a partner to peer edit and revise the narrative using the checklist to make sure all narrative elements are present.

Wednesday (01/04): Finish revising using checklist, and students will use computers to begin typing the final copy of the narrative. When finished, they will turn in the final and first draft of the narrative. The narrative is due on Monday (01/09).

Thursday (01/05): Computers to type final copy of the narrative. Students will also be given a study guide for the mid-term exam. We will discuss what will be on the exam in class today.

Friday (01/06): Computers to finish typing the final copy of the narrative. Students may work on the study guide and getting ready for the midterm exam if they are finished early.
