Monday

·         Reading 8 – Students will read several selections from the textbook using the talking to text strategy to identify elements that show the type of nonfiction organization that is used (chronological, cause and effect, comparison and contrast). After reading these, students will complete critical thinking questions for each.

·         Reading 7 – Students will finish taking the nonfiction test today (if needed). Students will also finish the worksheet focusing on the “Big Question” for the short stories unit. As a class, we will discuss this worksheet together. Students will turn this in and then work on taking notes from the textbook on the note-taking guide provided for them. (Notes on short stories on pages 200-203 in book.)

·         Practical Literature 10 – Students will finish reading part two of Fahrenheit 451 today. As a class, we will discuss the discussion questions for part two and review for a quiz on part two, which students will take tomorrow.

Tuesday

·         Reading 8 – As a class, we will discuss the talking to text notes for each nonfiction selection that students read for today. We will focus on identifying text structure and the elements of organization that help us identify the text structure of each. We will also discuss the critical thinking questions for each. Students will then turn in all of their work for the three readings. They will then work with a partner to respond to the questions on page 547 in the textbook comparing and contrasting all three readings. Students will take a quiz on nonfiction on Thursday. We will discuss the quiz format and content.

·         Reading 7 – As a class, we will discuss the notes from yesterday that students took down from the textbook. Students will also complete a plot diagram sheet identifying the elements of plot and where they fall on the diagram sheet. As a class, we will then begin reading the first short story of the unit, “The Treasure of Lemon Brown.” Students will use the talking to text strategy to identify the elements of short stories presented within this story.

·         Practical Literature 10 – Students will take a quiz on part two of the novel today. When finished, students will begin reading part 3. They will answer discussion questions as they read.

Wednesday

·         Reading 8 – As a class, we will discuss the talking to text notes for each nonfiction selection that students read for today. We will focus on identifying text structure and the elements of organization that help us identify the text structure of each. We will also discuss the critical thinking questions for each. ·         Reading 8 – Students will take a quiz on nonfiction. When finished, students will read their AR books silently. Students will then brainstorm in small groups about persuasive writing to fill in a KWL chart. We will discuss this and students will begin reading “Sharing an American Dream” (persuasive speech) in the textbook. They will answer the guided reading questions as they read and post-reading questions at the end of the selection.

·         Reading 7 – As a class, we will discuss the post-reading questions from “The Treasure of Lemon Brown.” Students will analyze the short story to identify elements within the story, such as literary devices, elements of plot, etc. Students will turn in their packet today.

·         Practical Literature 10 – As a class, we will continue to read part 3 of Fahrenheit 451. Students will complete the active reading guide as they read.

Friday

·         Reading 8 – Students will take a quiz on nonfiction. When finished, students will read their AR books silently. ·         Reading 8 – Students will work on computers to research and write their biographical essays today. Final copy of the essay is due on Friday.

·         Reading 7 – Students will be in the library today to return AR books, check out new books, and/or take quizzes on AR for marking period 2.

·         Practical Literature 10 – Students will continue reading “Fahrenheit 451” together. They will complete a worksheet on Faber’s lecture today from part 2 of the book. As a class, we will discuss the key points of his lecture.

They will be able to identify each persuasive technique and each type of propaganda in the readings. This completed lesson packet is due tomorrow. As a class, we will also review for a test on nonfiction. The test will be on Friday.

Students will then begin unit 2 on fiction (short stories). Students will respond to specific questions about the “Big Question” for this unit and complete questions for discussion. As a class, we will discuss the Big Question together and student responses.

·         Practical Literature 10 – As a class, we will continue to read part 2 of Fahrenheit 451. Students will complete the active reading guide as they read.

Thursday

·         Reading 8 – Students will be given a writing assignment to complete (p. 499 in textbook). They must choose one person to write about who took risks in order to achieve a goal or to help others. They will write an essay on this person for next week. Due date for final copy of essay is Thursday, November 7^th. Bell ringer check today. Students will also go to the library as a class to check out new A.R. books, renew, or return books.

·         Reading 7 – Students will work on creating their instructions and signs for part of the class today. As a class, we will also review for a quiz on nonfiction (notes from p. 410-411 in textbook). Quiz will be on Thursday, Oct. 31^st. Bell ringer check today as well.

·         Practical Literature 10 – Students will continue reading “Fahrenheit 451” together. They will complete the active reading guide as they read. Students will also discuss Beatty’s lecture together and they will compare details about the society in the book to our current society.

·         Reading 8 – Students will work on computers to research the person they are writing about. They must include three significant details to support their main idea. Students will include in-text citations within their essay and a bibliography to show sources.

·         Reading 7 – Students will share their instruction manuals or signs today with the class. When finished, students will continue working on the persuasive speech questions, etc.

·         Practical Literature 10 – Students will take a quiz on part one of “Fahrenheit 451” today. When finished, we will continue reading part two of the book. Students will complete the active reading guide questions as they read as well.
